Message - Bob Bors visits Japan - July 2008

Bob Bors is visiting Japan to get first hand information on Japanese Haskap. Here is an excerpt of an email from Bob received on July 21, 2008.

"Hi all,

I'm in Hokkaido (July 21, 2008)  pretty much at the end of collecting and having a few days of "how am I going to get these seeds inspected" combined with site seeing.

Researchers and companies have rolled out the red carpet for me.

I met one company owner who buys 20% of the Japanese Haskap fruit. He said he wanted to try mine (my frozen samples were at the hotel, I had only brought jam with me). He said he has tasted Haskap throughout Japan and places in Russia and China. When he tasted my 'Bulk row 9' berries he smiled and gave me deep bow with his hands pressed together. He said "These are the best Haskap I have ever tasted. I want to buy all your Haskap". His company is a major distributor of fresh and frozen Haskap."

Later I met three reps from the largest buyer in Japan that also import from China. It is a health food company. They were all pleased with the taste (of my Haskap) but said more importantly that they want quantity. They said they have many product lines they would like to try!

I got fruit from 13 places. I think I photographed the worlds largest Haskap berry : 3.2 grams! (most on the bush were 1/2 that size) It tasted good but was ugly looking.

Bob"
